Default The 2010 Pick 3 Contest!

2010 F1 Pick 3 Contest

Gentleman, and ladies?, the 2010 FIA Formula 1 season is upon us. We are getting a bit of a late start, but I am excited to present the 2010 F1 Pick 3 Contest presented by [Sponsorship Available]. It was originally our plan to have the contest completely automated, but the programmers have pulled a USF1 and have requested permission to miss the first four races of the season. RacerX being the compasionate and understanding Pick 3 Contest Commissioner that he is has graciously allowed the programmers time to complete their work. The fact that they are his only option and he doesn't have much of a choice is negligible.

As has been tradition, the rules will not deviate from prior years, and the rules are as follows:

----------

If a contestant correctly picks the driver that qualifies in the pole position, the contestant shall receive one point.

If a contestant correctly picks the driver that finishes the race in the first place position according to the official FIA finishing order, the contestant shall receive three points.

If a contestant correctly picks the driver that finishes the race in the second place position according to the official FIA finishing order, the contestant shall receive two points.

If a contestant correctly picks the driver that finishes the race in the third place position according to the official FIA finishing order, the contestant shall receive one point.

If a contestant correctly picks the driver that finishes the race in the last position according to the official FIA finishing order, the contestant shall receive one point.

All picks must be submitted by contestants prior to the start of official Friday Practice.

The Commissioner holds the right to change the rules, points, and anything else that he so chooses and do pretty much whatever he wants at any time and for any reason.

----------

These are the rules gentleman. Know them, live them, don't piss off the Commissioner. If anyone has any questions, please PM the great, grand Commissioner RacerX of myself.

Darn you Sulka, you posted before I could get my cool event information post up. You screwed up the order, now people aren't going to be able to tell what race your picks apply to.

These are my picks for this year:

Pole - Hamilton

1st - Alonso
2nd - Hamilton
3rd - Vettel

Last - Liuzzi

I'm also going to assume not everyone will get their picks in exactly in time due to our late start. Thus, I propose that we allow picks to be entered after Friday Practice has started, what do the rest of you think?

I also want to propose that we add the fastest race lap to the contest and award correct picks one point. Yay or nay? Sound off when you submit your picks.

So, is this really a 'pick 5' contest? Sorry I didn't follow it last year.

I suppose technically it is a 'Pick 5 Contest', which I imagine started out as merely a 'Pick 3 Contest' and has transformed since its inception into its current state.

It started as a pick the podium, but getting the players in the exact order proved to be tougher than one would imagine. Thus, the pole and last runner (DNFs don't count) were added as bonus picks - they ain't easy either (so endith the history lesson).

Anyways...

Pole: Hamilton

1st: Hamilton
2nd: Vettal
3rd: The Mighty Hulk

Last runner: Chandhok

So, after four races this is where the Pick 3 Contest currently stands:

Pick statistics so far:
  • Sebastian Vettel has been the top picked person for Pole with 10 picks, followed closely by Hamilton who has 8. Only four people have been picked to win the Pole; Vettel, Hamilton, Alonso, and Webber.
  • Vettel and Alonso have been the favorites to win, each having 8 picks out of a total of 26. Hamilton's third with 5 picks to win, and the rest are spread out among the other Big Four drivers (Big Four = Ferrari, RBR, McLaren, & Mercedes).
  • Alonso, who has the most podium picks of any driver, is also the top pick to finish second (picked 8 times) with Vettel right behind him (with 6 picks).
  • Button finally gets a little respect with the most third place picks, even though that's about all he's been picked for, he's still considered better than Massa based on picks alone. Button has 5 picks to finish third, with five more people tied at 3 picks each.
  • The battle for last finisher appears to be heating up between Chandhok and Trulli, with 7 and 5 picks respectively. Petrov isn't that far behind with 4, either.
  • All-in-all, Red Bull Racing has received the most love this year, with 36 overall picks for Pole and Podium finishes. Though it is Vettel's picks to get the pole that give them their lead over Ferrari, who has 29 overall positive picks. Of those 24 come from podium finishes alone, Ferrari leads the rest in picks for podium finishes.

And how many correct picks, and points, have these statistics turned into? Collectively we've picked correctly enough times to get 44 points out of a possible 208...that's just over 21% correct...

These first races really haven't seen a team stay dominant from start to finish, due to bad strategy, faulty parts, or just asinine driving, which has made the picks a little more unpredictable. I guess only time will tell if RBR can finally get a stellar finish to match their qualifying dominance, and maybe Ferrari will finally go from strategery to strategy...

After 8 races the Pick 3 Contest standings are:

  • f1fan-sky has the most points in a single race, after Canada, picking almost perfectly. She correctly picked the pole, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for a total of 7 point, and thus catapulting herself into first in the standings. That is also the closest anyone has come to a perfect pick yet this season.
  • Touchette (ie: me) has gotten lucky and is tied with f1fan for most 1st picks and is leading the field is 2nd picks.
  • MSulka leads the field in 3rd picks and average correct picks per race. He has missed two races and didn't score in another two, but has still managed to get an average 1.5 correct picks per race he's participated in. He'd probably be leading, or closer to it, if he hadn't missed those two races.
  • cptkablamo likes to pick only one pick correctly per race, but he's managed to make it some good ones with his two 1st and one 2nd picks.
  • skidmark is one of only three people, along with f1fan and Touchette, to compete in every race so far, but has been struggling to date scoring a handful of points from pole, last and 3rd picks.
  • armin deserves congratulations for finally getting on the board with his last runner pick in this last race in Canada. Hopefully he can use the momentum to add to his total.
  • The handful of others need to compete in some more races so we can really get some competition going.

We are only about 2/5ths of the way through the season with three real competitors for first in the Pick 3 Contest, but there's still plenty of time to see that change.

The two dominant teams, and the primary picks, of the season so far have been Redbull and McLaren...Are they going to make the picks easy and just go back and forth finishing on the podium every race or two? I suppose that remains to be seen...hopefully some of the other guys can keep the racing interesting and compete for podium finishes.
